This course explains how to obtain critical geotechnical information that supports design and construction decisions. The material also explains construction maps that record geologic conditions encountered during construction, and goes over the six major geophysical exploration methods. The material is based on Geotechnical Investigations, Chapters 4 and 5, by USACE.

After completing this course, the learner will have a better understanding of geologic field mapping and surface geophysical explorations, as well as an understanding of the following topics: 

• Surface and subsurface investigations methods
• Drilling in embankments and drill hole inspection and logging methods
• Boring, sampling methods, and major uses of boring
• In Situ testing for determining geotechnical properties
